Orange County, originally known as Mosquito county was renamed Orange County for the oranges that was the county's main product. In the 1970's the vast acres of citrus that was grown in the county was a beautiful sight. Today, however the orange groves are few in the county. Many were destroyed in the unusually cold freezing temperatures of the 1980's. The losses were too large for many of the growers to recover from and the land was gradually changed to more and more housing developments that were needed to support the strong population growth.
